    We have started the Nerve and Muscle clinic which caters to patients with various neuromuscular disorders such as neuropathy, myopathy, myasthenia gravis and motor neuron diseases. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography (EMG) Service is available to help diagnose these complex neuromuscular diseases. These patients require Multidisciplinary care and team support from experts in various specialities including Physiotherapy, Speech and Swallow therapy, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Dietician/Nutritional Support And psychological support. We at Dr. L H Hiranandani Hospital provide a comprehensive care required for such patients.

    Our Neurologist Dr.Megha Dhamne who is trained in Neuromuscular Medicine and is American Board certified in Neurology and Electrodiagnostic Medicine is actively involved in running the Clinic and performing EMGs. She has set up the protocol for nerve conduction studies and needle Electromyography (EMG) as per the Western guidelines.

    Neuropathy

    A disease of the nerves is called neuropathy. Neuropathy is commonly caused by diabetes mellitus, chronic alcohol and vitamin B12 deficiency.

    Other causes are hereditary (Charcot Marie Tooth disease), immune mediated (GBS, CIDP)and cancer.Patient will commonly complain of numbness, tingling, burning pain or abnormal sensation in feet or hands.  They may have difficulty walking or weakness of hands as well with inability to perform fine tasks such as using a key to open the door.

    Myopathy is a disease of the muscles. It is caused by either congenital or acquired conditions such as electrolyte imbalance, thyroid abnormalities,

    drugs (statins used to treat high cholesterol) or may be autoimmune (inflammatory myositis). Patients may complain of weakness or muscle pain or cramps. They have difficulty getting up from a chair or the floor, difficulty lifting up arms above the head. Occasionally a patient may have very high creatine kinase (CK) levels in the blood with/ without muscle weakness.

    We have a new set up at our hospital with the latest EMG machine for nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG). We have started ALS clinic where patients with various nerve and muscle related problems will be treated. Diagnosing neuromuscular diseases can be a diagnostic challenge. EMG is an extended part of the clinical examination. Our Neuromuscular specialist, Dr. Megha Dhamne is trained in the United States in one of the topmost hospitals, Cleveland Clinic. She has an experience in treating and diagnosing challenging neuromuscular diseases and performing complex EMGs. We have set up our EMG lab with protocols similar to that in Cleveland Clinic, USA. We have started ALS clinic multidisciplinary clinic to cater to the needs of a patient suffering from ALS and providing support to the caregivers as well.

    What are the symptoms of nerve root problems?

    • Neck pain
    • Lower back pain
    • Shooting pain going to the arms from the neck or to the leg from the lower back
    • Weakness and wasting of small muscles of hand
    • Foot drop

    What are the Investigations done?

    Patients with neck or back pain require nerve conduction study and electromyography test to identify the exact location, and severity of the nerve root involved. An MRI of neck and lower back is useful in identifying the underlying cause. If an underlying infection or non degenerative cause is suspected, then a lumbar puncture may be required. ALS is an important differential that needs to be considered in multiple root involvement.
